They met because of a friend. She was in school in Pittsburgh and he was in town. They met. They hung out. And then they didn’t see each other for a year and a half.

“The very first time I met him, he gave me his jacket,” Colleen remembered. “He was a keeper from the beginning.”

Six years after they met, and four and a half years after they became inseparable, Colleen and Mike tied the knot. She says her favorite thing about him is that he makes her laugh, even when she’s not in the mood to crack a smile, and as an observer, I can totally see that. Mike is this happy-go-lucky guy who is really, really good at getting his new wife to smile. The way he looks at you, Colleen … you’re right about him being a keeper. :)

Both Colleen and Mike are really into golf, as is Colleen’s family, so they decided to have their ceremony at the Golf Improvement Center in Medina. How’s that for unique??

Colleen did a first look with her dad. It was so sweet! :)

That little ring bearer is the cutest ever! Oh and those linen suits with Sperry’s? Awesome!

So everything was great, we got all our pictures done outside, and then? Then it began to pour just as guests were arriving! Everyone milled around in the store while we waiting for the monsoon to clear. Luckily it only lasted about half an hour and the outside ceremony went off without a hitch.

I can’t take credit for this photo idea. It was all Emily’s brain child! See why she’s awesome?

FAQ: What to Wear for Your Engagement Session09.11.12

Cooler temperatures, lovely warm light and soon-to-change-color trees can only mean one thing. It’s engagement season! And that means people getting engaged and getting their engagement pictures done. I have quite a few engagement sessions coming up and I’ve gotten lots of questions about what to wear. I think it deserves its own blog post, no?

Stay away from match-matchy, but instead aim to coordinate.

You know those old-school family portraits where the whole family is wearing a white shirt and the exact same acid-wash jeans? Let’s stay away from that look for your engagement photos. :) Don’t feel like you both have to wear red, for example, instead maybe he wears red in his checkered button-down shirt while she wears gray and yellow and pulls the red into her details. The goal is to coordinate, instead of trying to match each other perfectly. This creates more visual interest. Take a look at a recent J.Crew catalog to see what I mean.

Pile on the layers and accessories!

Talk about adding visual interest. A scarf? Love it. A chunky necklace? Love that too. These things photograph well because you’re dressing up an otherwise normal outfit with interesting statement pieces. Plus I love to shoot details and these things are perfect for that. Again, check out a J.Crew or Anthropologie catalog for inspiration.

Be comfortable and be you.

I can talk about accessorizing all I want, but if you don’t feel comfortable putting on a big necklace, that’s OK! The most important thing is to feel good in your own skin (and clothes). I generally tell my couples that if they want to do an outfit change, they should plan on doing one casual and one dressy outfit. But guess what? If you’re a casual couple that likes to watch football and never gets dressed up, you can do two casual outfits! The most important thing to me is photographing you in your element because that’s what engagement sessions are about. Telling your story.

Cleveland Wedding Photographer

Stay away from distracting logos.

That graphic T-shirt you have hanging in your closet should probably stay there for the engagement session. Unfortunately, logos are distracting and just don’t photograph well. If you both love the Indians, however, and want to document that, by all means, let’s do some photos of you in your jerseys. But the general rule of thumb is to leave logo-laden clothes at home.

Chagrin Falls Engagement

Do your wedding makeup trial run before your engagement session.

Why get all dolled up just to go back home again? Plan your makeup trial run for your engagement photo day! I don’t necessarily tell brides that they should go overboard on their makeup for engagement photos, but professionally done makeup is always a good thing. And since you’re all dressed up anyways, you might as well make a date night out of the whole experience!

Melissa & Greg | Wedding Sneak Peek09.10.12

We were glued to the radar all day, and when we saw blue sky start to peek out from behind the dark gray clouds, we knew Melissa and Greg would get to have their outdoor ceremony. And the weather ended up being perfect! They came all the way from California to be married in Cleveland. It was the least they could ask for, right? :) Melissa and Greg are high school sweethearts and their day was one of pure joy. Stay tuned for the full blog post next week, but for now …

101 in 1001: #97 Blog Every Day for a Month.09.07.12

I’ve had this thing looming over me. This single task that was written on my 101 list: Blog EVERY DAY for a month. I was slightly terrified.

Ever since I’ve been part of this industry, I’ve admired those photographers who not only blog every day, but blog really relevant and well-written content. I can now say from experience that it’s really hard! At the same time, I realized that the blogs I was visiting every day were the blogs that would have new content every day. And if anyone out there is reading this, I want to make sure I have new content for them every day.

So, a few things I learned from blogging “every” day for a month:

  1. It’s really hard. Period.
  2. You have to hold yourself to a standard of grace. I missed two days of blogging and I was all bent out of shape about it, but you know what? Sometimes you have to cut yourself some slack.
  3. I need to work on getting blogs done the day before so that my content is better … all around.
  4. I kinda like it. And I think I’m going to continue.

What about you bloggers out there? Do you blog every day? What inspires you?

Just for fun, I wanted to share some of my favorite photography blogs, most of which I check each and every day!

And just because I can’t post without a picture, here’s another one from my wedding last weekend. The full wedding will be on the blog on Thursday!

Border Collie

I don’t claim to be a pet photographer (check out my friend Brittany’s legit pet photography business, Boots and Bees), but for really awesome clients? Anything. Remember Ashley and Justin? They were on the blog not too long ago, and now they have an addition to their new family … Cooper! Cooper is a border collie puppy and pretty darn adorable. Check him out:

Creative Juices: I Wanna Dance with Somebody by Ben Rector09.05.12

It’s not easy to do a Whitney Houston cover … right? I’m pretty sure we’ve established that via American Idol, The X Factor or one of the 48 other singing shows on TV right now. But Ben Rector? He does her justice. Maybe it’s because he has such a different style than Whitney. I love the singer-songwriter vibe he brings to the song. Check it out:

What a beautiful wedding … despite the absolute downpour 45 minutes before the outdoor ceremony! So many unique details, a lovely color scheme and really fun people to top it off. I can’t wait to show you more next week!

One Year09.03.12

Happy one year anniversary to my love. This year has gone by unbelievably fast, and we’ve packed about as much as possibly could into 12 months. Here’s to settling down and the next 60 years. :)

P.S. I’m thankful I found someone as weird as me. :)

The Warrior Dash08.31.12

You guys. I got out of my box last weekend. I ran uphill through the woods, swam with my shoes on and played in mud. If you know me, you know that this is so not me. I pretty much do everything by the book (i.e., swimming means you take your shoes off, seeing mud means you walk around it rather than lay in it).

Life can get kinda stale though when you don’t spice it up every once in awhile, so when my friend Molly asked me to do the Warrior Dash, I felt like this was my chance. Have you heard about these new racing phenomenons? There’s a whole slew of them, but the Warrior Dash is a 5K, and I felt like I could handle that.

What I totally underestimated were the obstacles that stand in the way of you finishing the race! I know some people say they’re so easy, blah, blah, but I for one thought it was kinda hard to swim with heavy shoes weighing me down. And how about those logs that sit in 4.5 feet of water and SPIN when you try to go over them? Ridiculously hard (I blame it on being short).

Still though, despite the grueling 40-minute race and the hefty price tag that comes along with running in one of these, it was fun. Yes, fun! Who knew?

(P.S. Thanks to Sharon for actually bringing her camera to the race! :) )

Kelly & Josh | Wedding08.29.12

Remember Kelly and Josh? Well, I got to shoot their wedding with the lovely Amanda Donaho. She’s pretty awesome and gave away a wedding last year (where I got my giveaway idea), and Kelly and Josh won! It was fun having her in my territory and second shooting alongside her again. Check out her blog post here, and enjoy a couple photos from my perspective.
