Creative Juices: The Daylight by Andrew Belle05.06.13

Happy Monday! For me, Mondays are just like another other day and don’t necessarily hold the stereotypical “blah” like they do for others. That’s the beauty of working from home and doing something you really enjoy, I suppose!

When I worked for the fraternity, despite the fact that I liked my job and the people I worked with, Monday mornings always just kind of stared me in the face. I had a one-hour commute just to get to work, and that long drive was daunting at 7 a.m. when I was half asleep. Having good music on those car rides was a lifesaver (that’s when Nancy’s radio still worked).

If I would have known about Andrew Belle when I drove back and forth from Cincinnati to Oxford, I’m sure my Mondays would have been a little better. This song is beautiful and I love when it surprises me on my iTunes shuffle. Enjoy! :)

Lauren & Joe | Cuyahoga Falls Spring Wedding05.02.13

Cuyahoga Falls Ohio Spring Wedding

Lauren and Joe are two of those people that you feel like you’ve known forever, even if you’ve only known them a few months. (I could probably say that about all my couples!) Lauren is so sweet and warm and a little bit goofy (and hey, that’s one of Joe’s favorite things about her). :) And she’s amaaaazing in front of the camera!

Joe is very chill but will tell you anything you want to know. And it just so happens that he plays rugby … and suffered an injury days before their big day! He was still hurting by the time their wedding rolled around but you would never know it from looking at the pictures, right? So, he’s also a trooper. He didn’t complain one time!

And together? Together they’re even better.

Lauren and Joe had a small Cuyahoga Falls ceremony with their nearest and dearest. I’ve come to adore intimate weddings because they’re so personal and the bride and groom really have the opportunity to really celebrate with everyone they love. This wedding was no exception.

Thank you guys for asking me to join you on your big day! Let’s hang out when you move to our neighborhood. ;)

Cuyahoga Falls Ohio Spring Wedding

Lauren and Joe had a first look at High Bridge Glen in Cuyahoga Falls, the spot where Joe proposed. Magically, the rain held off and the light was perfect.

Oh, they are such naturals. This is a fave.

May Goals05.01.13

May Photography Goals

Ohhh May! Our street is in full bloom. All the flowers are out and the trees are green. I love it!

This month marks the start of my really busy season and I’m hoping to be a little bit more productive than last month before I get crazy busy. You know those days where you feel like you did a ton but you didn’t get anything crossed off your to do list? Yeah, that’s how April was for me. I felt busy, but I’m not sure what I was doing. :) All in all it was a good month, but my goal is to be more focused with my time in May. I want to make sure I get out from behind my computer screen and enjoy spring!

April goals recap:

Professional

  1. Get completely caught up with all March and April weddings so I can go into May with a clean plate! (the last April wedding will be on the blog tomorrow!)
  2. Research the markiii a little more (i.e., figure out why low-light focusing was such a problem). (I’ll be renting it again this month! :) )
  3. Clean up my office each day after office hours are over. (Total fail on this one. How can I be more organized??)
  4. Research Two Bright Lights and potentially join. (Still haven’t decided. ;) Any advice from people that are members?)
  5. Blog every weekday. (Close enough, right?)

Personal

  1. Read two books (The Scent of Rain and Lightening, Eight Girls Taking Pictures).
  2. Finish the guest bedroom (and hopefully blog it)! (Just waiting on a couple pieces!)
  3. Get OUR pictures taken!
  4. Cook organic, natural food at least 2/week.
  5. Clean two more boxes out of our junk room.
  6. Work out 5/week.
  7. Stretch each night before bed.

And, of course, my May goals:

Professional

  1. Shoot, edit and submit a fabulous styled shoot. :)
  2. Clean up my office each day after office hours are over (here we go again … ).
  3. Shoot three May weddings and stick to my new two-week turnaround on each.
  4. Update my portfolios before busy season kicks off.
  5. Clean computer before busy season kicks off.
  6. Update my photography budget.
  7. Blog every weekday.

Personal

  1. Read two books (Eight Girls Taking Pictures, Wild).
  2. Finish our guest bedroom.
  3. Play with Rosie at least twice a day. :)
  4. Spend Mother’s Day with my family.
  5. Have friends over for dinner at least once.
  6. Clean three boxes out of our junk room.
  7. Work out 5/week.
  8. Stretch each night before bed.

101 in 1001: #55 Get a New Car.04.30.13

I’m going to be completely honest. When my parents bought me my very first car seven years ago, I wasn’t very excited about it. It sounds so, so selfish (and it is), but I had my heart set on a Volkswagen Beetle. I wanted that cute, little car so bad and instead I got a Nissan Sentra, which I later dubbed “Nancy.”

Volkswagen Jetta TDI_0004

Turns out, Nancy and I did everything together. In those seven years, I was in college and then I got a job where I commuted two hours back and forth each day. We formed a bit of a bond, and I ended up loving her.

Recently, however, she’d been a bit sick. Rust spots aside, I’d racked up nearly 200,000 miles driving her all over creation and stuff was starting to go wrong, so we knew it was time to replace her. :(

Enter my new Volkswagen Jetta. :) I don’t know what my obsession is with Volkswagen but I’ve always had my heart set on one, and with the amazing gas mileage the diesel Jetta gets it kind of made it a no-brainer (except it wasn’t a no-brainer at all; it was the most stressful day of my life. I am the world’s worst haggler. Thank goodness Nathan was there to help me).

Volkswagen Jetta TDI_0003

Now I need a name for my new car! Can you please help me?? She’s a girl of course, and I feel like she’s a little trendy and edgy. Maybe something with a “J?” Nathan’s been calling her “Black Beauty,” but I’m still tossing ideas around. Sound off in the comments section below!

Business Lessons: Taking Time Off04.29.13

A little blogkeeping: For me, some of the most interesting posts on other photographers’ blogs are the ones about things they’ve learned while running a business. I get business questions from time to time and I thought I’d start another series to address some of my “aha” moments. I’ll keep my FAQ posts strictly about photography and Business Lessons will be about … business! :) Feel free to e-mail me questions at any time (lane@lanebaldwinphotography.com). My perspective obviously isn’t the only one or the right one, but hopefully I can help at least one person along the way.

Having worked in an office for the first five years of my professional life, I got pretty used to structure. I had a structured work day, I knew I had weekends off and I had a certain number of PTO hours set aside for my pre-planned vacations. There was not a lot of spontaneity in office life.

Figuring out a work-life balance in this new season of my life is probably my biggest struggle in self-employment … as you can probably tell because I talk about it all the time! It’s really, really hard for me to take a whole day off because my office is in my house and it’s SO easy for me to pop in and check my e-mail or look at my business Facebook page on my phone. Plus I feel like I need to be doing things constantly or I’ll get behind.

It’s taken me a year to realize that this is not healthy. Or maybe it’s just taken me a year to burn out from always being plugged in. Being plugged in all the time doesn’t make me better at my job. In fact, I get less and less productive the longer I work without a full day off … completely off, no thinking about photography. Because even though I love photography and it’s my passion, it’s still work.

It’s been increasingly important for me to schedule my work day into chunks of time and stay super focused during my scheduled work hours (see an example schedule here). Then when my schedule says to close my office door, it’s super important for me to listen and go do something completely unrelated to work.

And you know what I’ve realized recently? I can be spontaneous and take a random weekday off if I schedule my days on in the right way. It feels really good, especially when these two are waiting to hang out with me all day … without a camera in front of my face. :)

My Favorite Things: The Ellen Degeneres Show04.25.13

Every morning, right after I wake up, I make a smoothie and settle down on the couch to check my e-mail and watch The Ellen Degeneres Show. I love this part of my day because the house is quiet (except for Ellen’s infectious laugh) and I’m starting the morning with positivity.

The Ellen Show for me is kind of like everyone else’s Modern Family or Grey’s Anatomy—I watch it religiously and never miss an episode. It’s kind of embarrassing how much I talk about the show. Almost every day, as soon as Nathan walks in the door, I’m regaling him with something that happened on Ellen. You would think I knew the lady personally. I want to be like Ellen when I grow up and have fun no matter what the heck I’m doing.

If you need a Thursday morning pick me up (or you just want an excuse to laugh), here are two of my all-time favorite Ellen clips. Ahhhh, they never get old! :)

Baby Lane | 1 Year04.24.13

Akron Family Photographer

It doesn’t seem like that long ago that I was sitting across from Mike and Kirsten at Caribou talking about the soon-to-arrive baby in Kirsten’s belly. How quickly one year passes. That soon-to-arrive baby is now a full year old! I can hardly believe it!

It has been SO fun hanging out with this family every few months over the course of this last year. Getting to work with clients over and over is the reason this job is so rewarding, and I’m so thankful this little family chose me to document one of the most important years of their lives. Thank you guys! I can’t wait to see you again.

And in case you want to see Baby Lane changing over the last year, here he is from tiny to little boy:

Lauren & Joe | Cuyahoga Falls Spring Wedding Sneak Peek04.23.13

Ohhh I love my job! It was such a joy to document Lauren and Joe’s intimate wedding this last weekend. The weather forecasted rain all day, but by early afternoon it had cleared and we got to do their sweet first look outside at the place where Joe proposed. I give these two mad props for braving the cold and wind … you would never know it was chilly by looking at their pictures! And now these two are basking in the Florida sun!

More next week! :)

Meet Rosie04.22.13

Black and White Kitten

We adopted a cat, you guys! As I write this, this tiny, little furball is squished up against my leg. :) Rosie is a 10-week-old kitten that we found through a local shelter. We had been casually talking about getting a pet … thought about a dog, decided that was too much work (ha!), talked about a cat, talked about a dog again and then found Rosie! We knew that if we went to look at animals we’d probably end up with one, and Rosie is perfect and SUPER friendly.

She loves:

  • Cuddling
  • Playing with her toy mouse … and receipts and wrappers
  • Exploring every inch of every space
  • Burrowing under blankets

She hates:

  • Being alone
  • Using her litter box (oh boy)
  • The dryer
