Lindsey & Alex | Wedding ReceptionJuly 20, 2012

Lindsey is one of my best friends. She’s 1/5 of FBOFW, she was my college roommate, she was my study-abroad buddy, she was my post-college roommate. She’s the sweetest, most kind-hearted person … and she makes me laugh a lot. :) Her family is like an extension of my family, and I know the rest of FBOFW would agree.

When Linds accepted an offer to get her master’s in Scotland, we were all proud of her. She has this passion for culture, and she would be immersed in it for a year. What we all didn’t realize, and Lindsey can probably count herself into that “all,” is that she would meet her guy.

Yes, I wish Linds and Alex lived closer. Way closer. :) But the fact that I feel like I know Alex really well, after hanging out only a handful of times, says so much about him. Linds, you picked a good one.

These two had a destination wedding in Portugal in April and came to the States to have a celebration with family and friends. I feel so lucky that I got to be there and document it a little. Love you guys!

Minus Nicole not being there (she had a good excuse; you’ll see soon), it was perfect!

101 in 1001: #80 Play Mini Golf.July 16, 2012

I grew up playing mini golf. When I think summer, I think dusky, muggy nights with a club in one hand and a scorecard in the other. As a kid I lived for those nights … so much so that I had my 13th birthday party at a mini golf course. I’ll have to share a photo from that party one day. I sported a farmer’s tan and giant Dr. Martens sandals. Oh yeah!

As I’ve gotten older, mini golf has generally been reserved for vacations, so when Nathan and I headed to Hilton Head recently for my cousin’s wedding, I had one goal outside of watching my cousin and cousin-in-law (how does that work??) walk down the aisle. Does that officially make me dorky? Probably, but I’m OK with it. :)

I’m pretty sure the last time we played mini golf was three years ago when we visited that same cousin in Hilton Head. How did I let THREE years go by? See why it was on my 101 list?

This is what happened last time we played, and guess who won?!

Yeah, NATHAN won. Even after hitting his ball in the water multiple times. Have I mentioned that I’m slightly competitive when it comes to mini golf? I so wanted to win this time around.

Good form …

… but then I got a hole in one! (I hope I’m not this annoying in real life.)

And the scorecard doesn’t lie! I even got a free pass to play at the course again. Maybe in, say, three years??

FAQ: Getting Your Professional Photos PrintedJuly 13, 2012

A little game of Mad Libs:

They’re here! They’re here! You got your disc of [wedding, engagement, newborn, family] photos and you [take, upload] them to the [nearest, easiest, most advertised] photo printing [store, website]. You finally get those gorgeous prints and … wait. Why is my [head, arm, bracelet, flowers, feet] cut off in the photo? It didn’t look that way on the disc.

Lots of photographers heavily encourage, or even require, that their clients get prints through their chosen printer. And there’s a reason for that. While I’m pretty laid back and understand that I’m giving my clients a disc of photos to ultimately do with it what they will, I do recommend that they get those pretty prints done through my printer or a couple other vetted options. Here’s why …

My Canon 5D Mark ii shoots at a ratio of 3:2. Do the math and it converts to a 6×4—or 4×6—photo printed perfectly.

Professional Photo CroppingHere’s my faaaavorite photo from Nicole and Chris’ wedding. It’s at a 3:2 ratio.

Unfortunately, not all print sizes fit into that ratio as perfectly as a 4×6, and I don’t know about you, but I want to get big, dramatic photos printed at all kinds of crazy sizes. This means that I have to physically crop the photo to the size I want. 8×10? A 4:5 ratio. 20×28? A 5:7 ratio. Make sense?

Professional Photo CroppingHere’s that same photo at a 7:5 (or 5:7) ratio. Compare to the photo above to see what’s missing. In this case, it’s a pretty good crop.

Professional Photo CroppingAnd here it is at 5:4 (or 4:5 … an 8×10).

Color rendering and other quirks aside, the easiest and most advertised printers don’t allow you to choose the crop. That means if you choose a ratio other than 3:2, you’ll get your photos back looking differently than they do on the disc. And in some cases it might not be a good different.

If you have the luxury, get your prints done through your photographer’s printer to ensure the absolute best quality. If that’s not an option for you, consider using a company like www.mpix.com that at least allows you to choose your crop.

I hope that helps someone out there! :) If you have other questions, I’d love to answer them. Feel free to leave them in the comments section down there.
